An Overview of Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most reliable modern replacements for lost teeth. When a tooth is lost, it is difficult to replace it because it will not fall out of the mouth. In addition, when a tooth is lost, it cannot be rebuilt because it is actually part of a complete mouth structure and cannot be simply replaced by attaching a tooth to a post. Therefore, the only solution is to get a dental implant. A dental implant is a surgically fused dental component which interfaces with the patient's bone or gum to secure a new dental prosthetic for a fixed tooth, bridge, crown, denture or even to serve as an orthodontic cement anchor. Unlike dentures or bridges, dental implants have been in use for decades and have a good safety record. When a tooth is lost, it is replaced by a dental implant which is then fused to the jawbone. The fused dental implant will stay in place until it is fully attached to the jawbone, so that the patient will not need any real tooth restoration work for many years. There are many different types of dental implants, including one which is made from titanium and another from a type of plastic known as silicon. Depending on the needs of your teeth and the type of implant needed, there may be several options to consider.

Most dental implants are placed through a small cut in the gums at the back of the mouth. A small titanium post is then placed directly into the gums. The procedure is quick and painless, and will rarely cause swelling or pain during the recovery period. If the implants are placed via a bridge too, the patient will also have a small titanium post inserted into his or her mouth along with the bridgework. Both of these types of implants are called endosteal implants. Endosteal implants are completely natural looking because they are built to look like a tooth. Titanium dental implants are used to replace teeth that have been destroyed because of decay or injury. It can take several years for a permanent replacement to take hold, so the dentist will likely place implants in between. In fact, the entire process usually takes just as long as that of placing bridges - three to five years total. The titanium that is used for the implants is often taken from the same titanium used for titanium plates used in medical procedures.

Bridges are actually two separate procedures: One will use a pocket of bone that has not eroded, and another will implant artificial teeth into that same pocket. The first step in bridging begins when the surgeon removes the surrounding bone with a scalpel and a drill and realigns the bone in the gum tissue. After that, a new pocket is created for the implants to go into. The surgeon then implants the new teeth in that pocket and closes the formation of the gum tissue around them.

Dental implants have changed the way people feel about getting a new set of teeth. They offer the advantage of never needing to experience the discomfort of pulling teeth or the embarrassment of dentures. Instead, people can have realistic looking replacements that last a lifetime.
